MOUNTAIN HARVEST MUSIC
The Mountain Harvest Festival features some of the best and most entertaining music in and around western Colorado for three days of musical fun and family entertainment. An eclectic choice of music of varying styles is always a big part of the weekend. In the past there has been virtually every popular style of music represented from bluegrass to classical, from jazz and blues to country and western, and from rock and roll to americana and folk. Every year there are some new musical surprises.
Friday
The festival kicks off on Friday with the Chili Cookoff, where there is always some live music to go with the spicy food and local brews. Later, during the evening, one can find music and entainment of all sorts in the various venues, clubs and restaurants around downtown Paonia in the “Pub Crawl”.
Saturday
Saturday in Town Park there will be performers on the Main Stage from noon until the late afternoon. The big event of the evening is known as the Saturday Night Concerts, where 4 different venues will be serving up some amazing entertainment. There are 2 acoustic music venues, a theater/concert venue, and a venue aimed at the dancing crowd. All of the venues are within walking distance of each other so attendees may move back and forth from venue to venue and catch a wonderful variety of musical acts. There are usually around 16 different musical shows during the evening. It’s been stated that one can hear more music in one evening at the Saturday Night Concerts than they usually hear in a whole year.
Sunday
The music events on Sunday all take place on the Main Stage in Town Park. A variety of bands and performers ply their craft once again for a large crowd under the shade of the enormous trees throughout the park. Crafts and food booths, and a farmers’ market are located around the periphery of the concert area.
That’s a lot of music for one weekend! If you are interested in getting involved more personally with the music, there are several educational music workshops opportunities throughout the weekend that you may sign up for. Make sure to check these exciting options out in the workshop section of this website.
Tickets for Saturday night concerts are available on-line:

Music: Big Bottom
Big Bottom -- Howard Berkman's all-star trio. Chicago, New York, Paris -- Howard has been there with his guitar and captivating voice. Growing up in Chicago he learned chops form his Dad, also a professional musician, and soon was playing with folk legend Steve Goodman. A little later he was the main force behind the popular Chicago band the Knaves, who’s recordings have been re-released internationally on Sundazed Records. Howards ground breaking band, Yama and the Karma Dusters, from the early 1970s, was released on CD in 2010. While in Chicago he performed on stages with Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Hound Dog Taylor, Michael Bloomfield, and many others of note. He worked for Decca Records in Paris for several years in the 70’s and then eventually ended up in Colorado. He has been playing music here ever since. His recent albums, Blue Testament, and Tales of the Old West Side show the versatility of his guitar playing and songwriting by combining blues, cool jazz, gypsy guitar, and even Klezmer styles. Finishing out his new rocking, blue, full on trio, Big Bottom, are Jeff Reynolds on upright bass and Harry Knipe on drums. For more info check out howard berkman.com.
Music: Buffalo Joe
Buffalo Joe is one of the best-kept secrets in the Roaring Fork Valley, even among the band members themselves. The Joes are known throughout a seven-block area in the east-central region of the upper Roaring Fork Valley. They are famous for low-energy live performances that leave audiences yawning and heading for the exits, often with feelings of disappointment, anger, frustration and even outright hatred. They’ve been spit on, run out of town, shunned, banned and pelted with perfectly good peaches, and yet they still keep coming back for more. They have shared the stage with Jugglin’ Jim, Standing Man, 1979 Elvis impersonator of the year Kim Dong Long, and the largest cockroach ever discovered in Western Colorado. They were recently named one of 2009’s Least Influential Bands by Nobody Magazine...... but in all reality:
Buffalo Joe is a side(ways) project for three members of the long-running Flying Dog Bluegrass Band of Aspen. Rooted in contemporary bluegrass, with shades of alt-country and Celtic, the band features Steve Johnson on banjo, guitar and vocals; Trevor Mounjoy on bass; and Paonia’s own Randall Utterback on fiddle, mandolin, guitar, dobro and vocals. For Harvest Fest, the Joes will be joined by Carbondale’s Dave Notor on dobro and mandolin, and Glenwood Springs’ Fred Jarman on guitar and vocals. This Mountain Harvest Fest, have yourself a cup of Joe—Buffalo Joe.
Music: Russ Chapman
A Modern Rendition of an Old-time Tradition
With a decidedly creative style, Russ Chapman stomps and sings highly original music drawn from the deep well of Americana. combining a keen sense of melody and lyrical wit, with medicine show sensibility, here is one of those rare performers who can keep an audience on the edge of its ears.
Hailed in Nashville as a 'songwriter's songwriter,' and now residing in Paonia, Russ has recorded and performed with multiple Grammy winners, including members of Ricky Skagg's Kentucky Thunder, Jim Lauderdale's band, and America's favorite cowboys - Riders in the Sky. It was during a Nashville co-writing session with Earth, Wind and Fire's founding member Ronnie Laws that a giddy Laws proclaimed, "You've got a good thing there, man!" Indeed, from the melodically percussive guitar style and inspired word-smithing, to an impressive ability to stomp and shuffle his feet, there is something positively fun and refreshing about Russ Chapman. Or, as John Anglim (KAFM Radio) put it, "Every once in a while an artist comes along who defies description... Russ Chapman is unforgettable!"

Music: Gypsy Jazz Social Club
Built from guitarist Les Choy's desire to create a string-band based jazz ensemble, GYPSY JAZZ SOCIAL CLUB draws from a roster of versatile musicians inhabiting Colorado's western slope. Gypsy Jazz is the accepted moniker for a genre of music that was all but single-handedly developed by Django Reinhardt, a visionary gypsy guitar player of Belgian descent who successfully integrated American jazz, traditional gypsy melodies, popular tunes from the 1920's to modern times, and a respectable selection of original compositions. Mysterious yet strangely familiar, semi-obscure but always swinging, this unique form of music and Gypsy Jazz Social Club are a perfect match.
The Gypsy Jazz Social Club also features Bob Becker, formerly of Mednight Mesa, on the mandolin, Kurt Isgreen also of Midnight Mesa fame, on on guitar and sometimes banjo, and.......
Long-time Gunnison resident DREW MURDZA is proficient on a variety of stringed instruments which include viola, violin, guitar, bass, and even the ukelele but the GJSC showcases his mandolin and fiddle playing. Collaborating with The String Cheese Incident and Acoustic Junction, Hayes helped define the acoustic jam band sound. He continues this tradition performing original songs and arrangements on Mandolin, Guitar, Dobro, foot board and his latest creation, the Stratobasto.
On stage Hayes' presence is electrifying. He taps his feet on an amplified floor board, slaps accents on his guitar and cheeks, wails on the harmonica and sings charismatically. His fingers dance around the strings with incredible fluidity creating rich harmonic textures and rapid-fire riffs.
The music is fresh and original but steeped in tradition; borrowing from blues, bluegrass, celtic, world beat, folk, rock and jazz.

Gabrielle Louise is a nationally touring troubadour noted for her poignant lyrics (a two-time John Lennon Songwriting Contest finalist, winner of the Jack Maher Songwriting Award) and lush voice. The daughter of two gypsy musicians, Gabrielle inherited the genetic predisposition to wanderlust and song.
Gabrielle Louise's music is anchored deeply in folk, but undeniably drawn to rich harmonies and melodic adventurism. Her sound has the earthy feel of early Joni Mitchell while also veering into the spirited delivery of fellow genre-hopping artist Martin Sexton. Unafraid to take a random musical escapade in the name of inspiration, Gabrielle is at one moment folkie and ethereal, the next moment a smoky jazz chanteuse. She has released four records, Journey (2006), Around in Circles, the E.P. (2007), Cigarettes for Sentiments (2008), and Live in Coal Creek Canyon (2009).
